French in the IB Diploma: what Hong Kong and Mainland families should know

French sits in Group 2 of the IB Diploma, Language Acquisition. Students who already have some French usually take French B at Standard Level or Higher Level. Beginners take French ab initio, which starts from the basics across the two years of the Diploma.

Families in Hong Kong and Mainland China often meet the IB for the first time in English or Chinese. This site keeps a French introduction next to that explanation, because the language is part of the programme, not only a menu label.

Fitting an IB online class around a Hong Kong or Mainland school day

Hong Kong Time and China Standard Time are both UTC+8, with no daylight-saving shift. A student in Hong Kong and a student in Shanghai can join the same live class.

SprintMind teaches from Scarborough, Toronto. After school in Hong Kong and the mainland is morning in Toronto. The exact slots are confirmed when a family enquires. A class built for a Toronto afternoon will not fit this timetable.

Three questions parents ask before an IB online class

Parents usually ask three things. Is the IB Diploma recognised by the universities their child is considering? How is an online class different from a recorded video? And where does French fit if the child has never studied it?

Recognition depends on the university and on the student’s full results, so this page does not promise admission. An online class here means live teaching in a small group. French ab initio is the starting point for beginners. French B is for students who already have a foundation.
